Declared Turtle Trade From the United States
Nuggets - bits of information that are interesting and help in arriving at conclusions but fit nowhere in particular into the organization of this piece.
2 shipments of 50,000 Trachemys scripta elegans each were exported from Atlanta by the same exporter to different customers 1 day apart Sept 28 and Sept 29 , 2005
The countries receiving by far the most shipments from Dallas/ Fort Worth are Japan and Hong Kong: 497 and 428 shipments over 3 years.
The 15 largest shipments out of Los Angeles CA were all Trachemys scripta elegans, the smallest of the 15 shipments contained 15,000, the largest was 150,000.
There were 280 shipments to Japan from Miami, FL over the three years. The largest of these shipments was 250 animals, indicating pet trade commerce. By way of comparison 20,000 turtles of this same species were in one shipment to Hong Kong from Miami.
Trade in mass produced species to Hong Kong appears to be dominated by just a few importers. As examples: one importer in Hong Kong received 588 shipments totaling 6,744,291 turtles, another received 67 shipments in the time covered by the data, totaling 1,909,866 turtles. These two importers accounted for 63.5% of all declared turtle exports to Hong Kong.
Of the 347 shipments to Mexico from New Orleans, LA 215 were for more than 5,000 animals
4 of the largest 5 shipments to leave New York, NY went to the same person in the Czech Republic
There were 1,045 shipments to Japan from San Francisco, most of these were relatively small, indicating pet trade commerce.
In the three year period studied, 142 shipments were sent to the Czech Republic, 99 of these went to the same importer.
104 of the 999 shipments to Germany were of 10 animals or less.
40 shipments to Hong Kong of 100,000 or more animals
967 of the 2,222 shipments to Japan were of 10 animals or less
52 shipments to Taiwan of 50,000 or more animals
