Medicinal Turtle Preparation
Almost all of the turtles and tortoises found in the Qing Ping free market in Guangzhou are there due to their medicinal value rather than their food value. The bulk of the demand for medicinal chelonia is apparently coming from middle aged to older consumers. The younger Chinese generations are apparently not following the old customs/beliefs on the medicinal properties of turtles and tortoises.
The root, Smilax glabra (tu fu ling), pictured below is most commonly mixed with chelonia to create the medicinal soup. The price per kilogram of each species is listed along with various pictures in the following segments. Animals that are priced by the kilogram are primarily utilized for their medicinal or food value whereas animals priced per animal are primarily going into the pet or turtle farming trade.
