non CITES protected chelonians in the markets
Notochelys platynota - Malayan Flat-shelled Turtle
40 RMB ($5 US) per kilogram
Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia : Jawa, Kalimantan, Sumatera, Malaysia : Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak, Singapore, ThailandThe Notochelys in the markets were some of the largest I had ever seen before. Unfortunately they were also in very poor condition. The only species that as a whole was in worse shape were the Malayemys subtrijuga which were all basically dead or dying.
Pictured below are some extremely large and likely old specimens in the medicinal market area of the Guangzhou Qing Ping market.

The crate pictured below has been repackaged to be sent onward to another market. It is completely filled with Notochelys (about 4-5 layers deep). IATA (International Air Transport Association) regulations apparently did not apply to this crate.

A truly ancient notochelys specimen
