China, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Taiwan, Viet NamOcadia sinensis - Chinese stripe-necked turtle
40 RMB ($5 US) per kilogram
Chinese stripe-necked turtles were very common in the various markets. The size ranges varied considerably from captive bred hatchlings to wild caught adults. They were found both in the pet as well as the medicinal markets.
While there were innumerous "normal" stripe-necked turtles in the food and pet markets (including some captive bred hatchlings in the Beijing bird market), the animal below was found in the pet market section of the Guangzhou Qing Ping markets. These animals were selling for a premium due to their odd appearance. Apparently the concept of higher prices for animal oddities in the reptile world is a universal concept (the red eared slider in this bin actually appeared to have a waist to it!).
The striped-neck below was in a bin with some spengleri and mouhotti in a pet stall in Chengdu.
