non CITES protected chelonians in the markets
Cambodia, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Malaysia : Peninsular Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, Viet NamHeosemys grandis - Giant Asian pond turtle
60 RMB ($8 US) per kilogram
There were large numbers of this species present in the medicinal markets of Qing Ping in Guangzhou. Though not as populous as its counterpart, Heosemys spinosa, they were there in large numbers. Primarily subadults and adults were available.
The picture below is from the Turtle Survival Alliance. This organization, working in concert with Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden in Hong Kong managed to triage and place several thousand chelonians in Dec 2001 and Jan 2002 from a massive confiscation. Both organizations continue to strive to make a difference in the area of turtle and tortoise conservation.
The two animals encircled below are a male and female grandis at the rather nice outdoor reptile exhibit at the Guangzhou Zoo. The male was actively pursuing the female and eventually caught up with and bred her in the water. The single animal on the ledge in front of the glass is a Pyxidea mouhotti that is probably wondering how it managed to get there and how it was getting back.
